by Driftwood on August 21, 2010

The Spanish and Hispanic people are noted for being intensely passionate lovers and being romantic is important to win hearts in the game of love. There are many imaginative and highly-descriptive romantic Spanish language phrases and you’re going to add a nice selection of them to your vocab right now.

Bueno, before you can feel love you have to get together with someone. That’s for sure yes? The Spanish say:

Echarse un/a novio/a – To get yourself a boyfriend/girlfriend.

You can then have un ligue – a casual relationship, or something more lasting, una relación – a relationship, also called una historia. Confusingly, if you’re having “un ligue” your partner is also referred to as “un ligue”!

Throughout the Spanish-speaking world, the following Spanish phrase is commonly used to ask someone on a date:

¿Qué tal si damos una vuelta? – How about we go for a walk/ride?

So simple and once it’s helped you find a new flame, you’ll want to have a few authentic, romantic and easy Spanish phrases so you can refer to them affectionately. Try these:

Corazón, mi corazón – Heart, my heart.

Tesoro, mi tesorito – Treasure, my little treasure.

Mi principe azul/Mi princesea – My Prince charming/My Princess.

Luz de mi vida – Light of my life.

El hombre/La mujer de mis sueños – The man/woman of my dreams.

Each of those phrases are really sweet ways to romance your lover, all are used often in the Hispanic world.

Finally, there are romantic Spanish phrases called “piropos” – chat-up lines – and I’ll now share with you two of my very favorites. There are hundreds of these, some are humorous, some intensely passionate and others go from being highly-romantic to the cringe-worthy! Here’s a humorous Mexican one this writer has used on many occasions and it always brings a smile – at least!

¡Qué bombón – y yo con diabetes! – What candy and I’ve got diabetes!

And a piropo for the ladies that I have no doubt will become one of most romantic Spanish phrases they’ll use often:

Eres mi príncipe y siempre lo serás, y yo tú princesa hasta la eternidad – You are my Prince and you always will be and I your Princess until eternity.

Then again…!

Sprinkle the above romantic Spanish phrases into your ever-increasing streetwise Spanish vocabulary and they’ll earn you respect and admiration, and possibly a little bit more…!
